Fotowide 46: The unofficial beginning of summer

Spanish Banks, Vancouver, BC, Canada

In Canada, the Victoria Day holiday weekend (a.k.a., “May Two-Four”) marks the unofficial beginning of summer. June’s around the corner, warm weather is present (or on its way, c’mon!), and for many, it’s time to think about heading into the woods for some camping. For those of us in Vancouver, it’s beach weather for a picnic, a swim, a paddle, a row, some volleyball, or simply watch people go by, followed by the sunset over the hills and mountains of the Sunshine Coast.

I made the photo above at Spanish Banks in Vancouver, Canada, on 18 July 2013. This post appears on Fotoeins Wide at fotowide.wordpress.com, and and is a contribution to Travel Photo Thursday.

Number 35: Vancouver’s Spanish Banks on a sunny summer day

Summer volleyball on the beach: Spanish Banks, Vancouver, BC, Canada

In the doldrums of a long cold grey winter, there must be hope. That hope sustains us to the point where a person can get some sun and some warmth. T-shirt, shorts, jogging or running, or wearing flip-flops onto the beach with sand between the toes, and even, beach volleyball : warmer days are ahead. With that in mind and to provide a stark contrast to the winter version photo at this location, I give you a summertime view at Vancouver’s Spanish Banks …

Number 30: Vancouver’s Spanish Banks on a grey winter day

Spanish Banks, Salish Sea, English Bay, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Even under grey skies, there’s something inherently beautiful about a beach on a winter day with the water and mountains in sight. At low tide, the receding waters reveal mud flats onto which one can walk out for a good kilometre or two. I wrote about my walk through Vancouver’s western beaches including Spanish Banks on my blog.

Number 28: Bahamian blue at Nassau’s Junkanoo

Junkanoo Beach, Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas

If the fall or winter weather is starting to get you down, consider the following. Pictured here are some folks taking snorkeling lessons at Junkanoo Beach in Nassau, Bahamas. People had always mentioned “turquoise blue” water and “pure white” sand. Spending some time here meant I saw the truth of the descriptions and I finally believed what people were saying all along.
